HISTORY

HISTORY

Since the middle of the 19th century, the name Herm. Dauelsberg has been closely associated with the development of shipping in the Port of Bremen. In 1857 Herrmann Dauelsberg received permission from the Bremen Chamber of Commerce and the City of Bremen to take over the license to operate an existing shipbroking business under the name Herm. Dauelsberg.

Mr Christian August Bunnemann an apprentice in the predecessor’s company soon became partner and later took over the remaining shares from Hermann Dauelsberg's son Carl when the latter died in 1887.

Over the years, the company's core business has changed to meet the demands and opportunities of the shipping industry. In the beginning, the main business was port agency and cargo booking, for short-sea and deep-sea shipments as well as booking of sea passages for emigrants to the United States. This led to the ownership of sailing ships trading mainly to North and South America. Subsequently, the booking of sea passages for emigrants to North America became a very important business, which lasted until the end of the 19th century.

The business as chartering broker, port agency and ship owning remained, but it was the liner agency which became the core business of Herm. Dauelsberg for more than one hundred years, from the establishment of liner shipping in the late 19th century to the end of the 20th century. When their liner shipping principals began to take over the liner agency business themselves in the late 1980s and 1990s, Herm. Dauelsberg terminated almost all of its agency agreements. The company Herm. Dauelsberg GmbH & Co. KG is still family-owned today. C. Andreas Bunnemann has been managing the company since 1974 in 4th generation. With the purchase of the Brigg “Betty” in 1867, Herm. Dauelsberg entered into ship owning. At that time, and during the heyday of the liner agency business, ship owning was only a minor part of the company's activities, but this changed with the end of the liner agency business. At the moment Herm. Following a long tradition of more than 160 years, Herm. Dauelsberg has navigated the challenges and opportunities of the shipping industry, adapting to changing market dynamics while maintaining its commitment to excellence in maritime services.
