Herm. Dauelsberg is in shipping since 1857 by passion and heritage. Our long-term business relations are based on reliability and trust.

Nowadays our core business is ship owning, ship management and vessel operation in the container- and bulk segment. A dynamic and experienced team of marine professionals performs comprehensive and quality driven fleet management.

At the moment we have a mixed fleet of four vessels, one container ship and three bulk carriers. The vessels are chartered out to leading liner- and bulk shipping companies. It is our daily challenge to deliver the highest service to the shipping industry.

HISTORY

HISTORY

Since the mid-19th century, the name Herm. Dauelsberg has been closely associated with the development of shipping in the Port of Bremen.

In 1857, Herrmann Dauelsberg received permission from the Bremen Chamber of Commerce and the City of Bremen to take over the license of an existing shipbroking business and continue operations under the name Herm. Dauelsberg. Soon afterwards, Christian August Bunnemann, who had joined the predecessor company as an apprentice, became a partner in the business. Following the death of Hermann Dauelsberg’s son, Carl, in 1887, C. August Bunnemann acquired the remaining shares and assumed full responsibility for the company.

Over the decades, the company continuously adapted its activities to meet the changing demands and opportunities of the shipping industry. In its early years, the core business focused on port agency services, cargo bookings for both short-sea and deep-sea shipping, and the arrangement of passenger passages for emigrants travelling to the United States. These activities eventually led to the ownership of sailing vessels trading primarily with North and South America. During the second half of the 19th century, the booking of emigrant passages to North America became one of the company’s most important lines of business.

While chartering, port agency services, and shipowning remained integral parts of the company’s operations, liner agency activities developed into the principal business of Herm. Dauelsberg for more than a century. From the emergence of liner shipping in the late 19th century until the end of the 20th century, the company represented numerous international shipping lines. However, during the late 1980s and 1990s, many liner shipping companies began establishing their own in-house agencies, leading Herm. Dauelsberg to gradually terminate almost all of its liner agency agreements. Shipowning, which had begun with the purchase of the brig Betty in 1867, initially played only a minor role alongside the successful liner agency business. Following the decline of the agency sector, however, shipowning became increasingly significant within the company’s activities. Today, Herm. Dauelsberg GmbH & Co. KG remains a family-owned company. Since 1974, the business has been managed by C. Andreas Bunnemann, representing the fourth generation of the Bunnemann family leadership. With a tradition spanning more than 160 years, Herm. Dauelsberg has successfully navigated the challenges and opportunities of the maritime industry, continuously adapting to changing market conditions while maintaining its long-standing commitment to excellence in shipping and maritime services.
